Near Myconos is the sacred island of Delos (about 45 minutes). According to mythology, Delos was the birthplace of the god Apollo and his twin sister Artemis. After that, Delos was the sacred island of antiquity and the centre of the Athenian alliace (first called Delian alliance) was initially there. The island is uninhabited today and is a vast archaeological place with a remarkable number of monuments including the Sacred Port, the Sacred Way, the Sanctuaries of Apollo and Artemis, the Treasuries, the Terrace of Lions, the Sacred Lake and the Stadium.
