Once you enter the old city of Trabzon, go to the top of Boztepe Park. Enjoy the panoramic view while you are served Turkish tea in lovely old style silver teapots. Altindere National Park provides a magnificent setting for the 14th century Sumela Monastery , perched on a cliff 270 meters above a deep gorge. Surrounded by the ruins of the monks' dwellings, the church is covered inside and out with brilliant frescoes. The many wonderful day trips to mountain villages such as Hamsikoy , famed for its traditional rice pudding, are endless. Uzungol , a lovely alpine lake surrounded by mountains and meadows, is an excellent camping, hiking and fishing area; simple wooden bungalows make this a fun haven for adventurers. Tours to Sumela Monastery are available. However, if you are adventuresome, renting a car will allow you to explore at your own pace. We recommend driving the mountain roads headed towards the lakes where one can enjoy some great hiking, river fishing and kayaking.
